Troy Drops Third Close Sun Belt Match

CLARKSTON, Georgia – For the second time in as many day, the Troy women's tennis team dropped a tight, 4-3, decision to a Sun Belt opponent, this time to Georgia Southern in a neutral-court match in Clarkston, Ga.
Troy (11,7, 2-3) has lost its last three Sun Belt contests, but all three have come in 4-3 contests. This time, however, Troy won the doubles point but saw Georgia Southern (12-7, 2-2) win four of six singles matches.
After wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles by Troy, The Eagles won three straight singles matches, all in straight sets, to take a 3-1 lead.
Nancy Karaky and Sanae Ohta, however, kept the Trojans in the match with wins at No. 5 and No. 2, respectively. Each sophomore won her ninth straight match, starting with Karaky who won over Francisca Norregaard at No. 5, 6-4, 6-2. Ohta then won at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-4, over Mariana Ranzahauer.
That left just one match on the courts as Troy's Luisa Ferrauti and Mary Phillips Smith battled at No. 6 singles. The Eagles senior got the best of the Trojans freshman, winning 6-4, 6-4 to clinch the match.
The Trojans will now close their regular season on Friday at No. 69 Florida State. The Sun Belt Championships then get underway on Thursday, April 21, in New Orleans, La.
