Troy Men’s Hoops Rallies Past Arkansas State
2/6/2016 9:57:00 PM | Basketball (M)
JONESBORO, Arkansas – Sparked by John Walton III and Daniel Peace, Troy used an 8-2 run over the final two-plus minutes to rally past Arkansas State, 71-70, Saturday night at the Convocation Center in Sun Belt Conference action.
Walton scored five of Troy's (7-16, 2-10 Sun Belt) final eight points, including an old-fashioned 3-point play to give the Trojans the lead, while Peace hit 3-of-4 from the free throw line. The win was Troy's third straight at Arkansas State and snapped a five-game losing skid by the Trojans.
Arkansas State (11-12, 7-5) used a 19-6 run late in the second half to turn an eight-point deficit into a 66-61 lead with 4:07 to play, and that is when Walton and Peace took over.
Peace hit a jumper with 3:32 to play and, after an Arkansas State bucket and a Peace free throw, Walton hit a jumper with just under two minutes to play to pull Troy within two, 68-66.
Following a flurry of missed shots from both teams, Troy had the ball coming out of a timeout with 30 seconds to play. Walton drove to the basket, made the layup and was fouled on the play. He hit the free throw with 28 seconds remaining to give Troy a 69-68 lead.
An errant pass on the Red Wolves' ensuing possession put the ball back in Troy's hands and Peace was fouled. Peace, who was 1-for-5 from the line in the game at the time and just a 48.4 percent free throw shooter on the season, calmly hit both attempts to put Troy up by three.
Devin Carter drew a controversial foul on a desperation 3-point attempt with just three seconds to play. After hitting the first two free throws, he missed the potential game-tying attempt and a tip-in attempt by Nouhoum Bocoum wouldn't fall as time expired.
Wesley Person scored a game-high 22 points to lead the Trojans and hit three 3-pointers in the game to extend his streak with a trey to 52 games. Walton just missed his fourth double-double of the season as he finished with 21 points and nine rebounds, while Jordon Varnado added nine points and nine rebounds. Peace finished with seven points, three assists and two rebounds.
Anthony Livingston led the Red Wolves with 19 points, while Carter added 15 points and Bocoum chipped in 14 off the bench. Donte Thomas led Arkansas State with eight rebounds.
Troy won the game on the offensive glass and by taking care of the basketball. The Trojans pulled down 13 offensive rebounds and committed just six turnovers, while the Red Wolves had eight offensive boards and 12 turnovers. Troy finished the game with 12 more second-chance points (18-6) and 20 more points off turnovers (24-4) than Arkansas State.
The Trojans led by as many as 12 in the first half and settled on a 39-34 lead at the break after the Red Wolves ended the half on a 10-3 run.
Troy returns home to host Georgia Southern on Thursday night in Trojan Arena. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:15 p.m. in the second game of a doubleheader with the Troy women.
