Â
TROY, Alabama – Georgia Southern was able to overcome double-doubles from Troy's John Walton III and Shawn Hopkins in a 77-71 victory over the Trojans Thursday night in Sun Belt Conference action at Trojan Arena.
Â
Walton matched a game-high with 20 points and pulled a game-high 13 rebounds in the losing effort for the Trojans; he scored all 20 points and grabbed nine of his rebounds in the second half. Walton is now averaging 18.8 points and 9.8 rebounds over the past four games, plus three double-doubles in the last eight games.
Â
Hopkins' double-double was the first of his career as he scored 18 points and pulled down 10 rebounds; both career highs. Wesley Person added 16 points, including a trio of 3-pointers to extend his streak of consecutive games with a trey to 53 games.
Â
Troy (7-17, 2-11 Sun Belt) raced out to a 14-2 lead as Georgia Southern (11-12, 7-6) hit on just one of its first 11 from the floor. However, the Eagles connected on eight straight shots to pull within one, 21-20, with 7:29 to play. Georgia Southern would go on to score 16 of the final 23 points in the opening half to take a 36-28 lead into the half.
Â
Tookie Brown led the Eagles with 20 points and eight rebounds, as he hit on 11-of-11 from the free throw line. Mike Hughes added 14 points and eight rebounds with three steals. Georgia Southern, who won its fourth straight game, hit on 20-of-24 from the free throw line in the game, including 6-of-6 over the final 39 seconds of the game.
Â
Georgia Southern's lead in the second half hovered around the 10-point mark the majority of the time, as every time Troy cut into the lead the Eagles answered. Walton was 0-for-2 with no free throw attempts in the first half, but hit on 6-for-8 in the second half from the floor and 8-for-10 from the line.
Â
Walton pulled the Trojans within four, 71-67, with a tip-in with 40 seconds to play. However, Brown immediately hit two free throws and Troy came up empty on the ensuing possession.
Â
Troy will look to get back on track Saturday afternoon when it hosts Georgia State. Tipoff is scheduled for 4:15 p.m. and all general admission tickets will be just $5 as Troy will be supporting breast cancer awareness. Both the Troy men's and women's teams are donating items for a silent auction where proceeds will be donated to breast cancer research.
