Tale of Two Halves as Troy Women Fall at Little Rock
2/4/2016 7:54:00 PM | Basketball (W)
LITTLE ROCK – The Troy women's basketball team led by 12 points at halftime, but played a poor second half in a 79-64 loss to Little Rock at the Jack Stephens Center on Thursday.
Playing in a building it had never won in, Troy (10-10, 5-6) put up 40 points on one of the Sun Belt's top defenses in the first half, but shot just 26 percent (8-of-31) in the second half of a fifth straight loss.
Ashley Beverly Kelley led Troy with 21 points on 8-of-22 shooting while ArJae' Saunders was also in double figures with 13 points on 4-of-9 shooting.
Troy led by 12 points, 40-28, at halftime against a Little Rock (9-11, 7-4) team that surrendered 32 and 36 in the entirety of its last two games. However, Little Rock opened the third quarter with the first five points and got right back into the game.
After back-and-forth play, Alexius Dawn capped an 11-0 Little Rock run with a banked in 3-pointer to beat the third quarter buzzer. During that spurt Little Rock took its first lead since scoring the game's first basket and took a 55-50 lead into the fourth quarter.
Troy got within one in the first minute of the fourth quarter, but Little Rock scored five straight and Troy never got closer than five points again. Little Rock hit 10-of-12 free throws in the fourth quarter to put the game away.
In all, Troy got outscored 51-24 in the second half as Little Rock shot 53 percent (16-of-30). Little Rock, which came in averaging 4.1 made 3-pointers per game, went 8-of-22 from beyond the arc, including 5-of-8 in the deciding third quarter.
Little Rock outrebounded Troy, 42-31, including a 28-11 margin in the second half, largely due to the huge shooting percentage discrepancy.
Troy forced Little Rock into 20 turnovers for the second straight time, but unlike in a January win at Trojan Arena, Troy couldn't take advantage well enough and got outscored, 21-18, in points off turnovers.
Little Rock got a balanced scoring effort as Shanity James and Sharde' Collins each scored 18 to lead four in double-figures. Collins hit four 3-pointers, including a pair in the third-quarter run. James scored 10 points in the fourth quarter to keep Little Rock ahead. Dawn scored 15 points to go along with a game-high 11 assists.
Troy now continues a tough road trip on Saturday at Sun Belt leader Arkansas State. The Red Wolves defeated South Alabama on Thursday night to move to 11-0 in conference play. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m. in a game that will air on ESPN3.
