Moreno Captures Singles Draw for Troy

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama – For the second straight weekend, Troy took home a singles draw as Pablo Moreno won his singles lineup at the CCB Collegiate Invitational on Sunday.
The senior went to the wire in all of his victories. On Friday, he won 7-5, 7-5 over Ramon van Flymen of EKU. Saturday brought two three-set victories as he came from behind, 2-6, 6-4, 6-0, to defeat Justin Ghavami of Samford and 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 over Tim Ruetzel of Tulane.
His championship victory came after Christian Coetzee of UAB was forced to withdraw due to injury.
It wasn't the only victory on the weekend for the Trojans as Gabriel Niculescu captured a consolation singles draw. He fell 6-2 in straight sets on Friday to Kenton Parton of UAB, but rebounded on Saturday with a 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 victory over Sebastien Mueller of EKU and a 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 win against Fernando Vargas of UAB.
The sophomore captured his championship round on Sunday with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Anrue Fourie of UAB.
NOTEWORTHY
• Andy Lau and Moreno won the first two matches they faced in doubles play, but fell in the championship round, 6-2, to Komati and Coetzee of UAB.
• Niculescu captured another consolations victory as he and Andre Baldo won the consolation side of their doubles draw, 6-3, against Sanchis and Assis of EKU.
• Lau also competed in singles play, where he won his first matchup 6-2, 6-4 against Pierre Noyon of South Alabama then fell 6-3, 6-1 to Coetzee.
