Bettcher Tied for Sixth; Troy Tied for 12th Following Day One of East Bay Classic

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – Jared Bettcher fired a 1-under 71 to lead Troy in Sunday's opening round of the East Bay Classic at Kiawah at the Turtle Point Golf Course. Bettcher is tied for sixth place individually, while the Trojans are tied for 12th place at 12-over par.
Bettcher sank a pair of birdies on the front nine and made the turn at 1-under following a bogey on No. 9. He pushed back to 2-under with a birdie on the par-5 10th before a bogey on No. 16 pushed him to 1-under for the day. Bettcher is just three shots back of Tennessee's Jack Smith for the individual lead.
The Trojans are well within striking distance of the leaders with 36 holes to play. Tennessee shot 3-under and holds a three-shot lead over Augusta, while Memphis is five shots back in third. Troy is only six shots back of a trio of teams tied for fourth place at 6-over.
Luke Moser made the turn at 1-under after dropping three birdies around a pair of bogeys on the front of the course. However, he finished the day with a 2-over 74 after three bogeys on the back nine, which is good for a tie for 36th place.
Clayton Vannoy, the nation's No. 32 ranked golfer, finished the day at 5-over and is tied for 67th place, while Calum Masters is tied for 73rd following a round of 6-over and Cam Norman is tied for 93rd after shooting 8-over. Competing as an individual, Sam Prater shot 10-over and is tied for 103rd.
Troy will play Monday's second round with Gardner-Webb, Jacksonville State and Coastal Caroline. The foursomes will hit the course beginning at 9 a.m. (CDT) for the shotgun start with groupings starting on the seventh, eighth and ninth holes.
