Comeback Falls Short, Volleyball Drops Match in Four

TROY, Alabama – The Troy volleyball team fell to Georgia State in four sets (20-25, 25-22, 17-25, 23-25) in Trojan Arena on Sunday afternoon.
Troy (6-18, 0-7 Sun Belt) fell behind early as Georgia State (8-11, 0-7 Sun Belt) took a 10-2 lead in the first set. The Trojans went on a 10-3 run of their own and cut it to as low as one point, but the Panthers finished the set on a 12-8 run.
The Trojans took a commanding 19-11 lead, but Georgia State climbed back and tied it at 22. Troy scored three straight points and took a 25-22 win in the second set.
In the third set, the Panthers took a 21-11 lead and went on to take the set 25-17. The fourth set saw nine ties and three lead changes, but a late rally by Georgia State was the deciding factor.
QUOTABLE
"We expect players to step up into roles and we're really disappointed when they don't," Sonny Kirkpatrick said. "I'm really disappointed in the way that our team came out and performed. They were prepared. We've got to do a better job of bringing our own energy to the match."
TURNING POINT
With the match tied at 23, back-to-back kills from the Panthers gave Georgia State a 25-23 victory in the fourth set.
STAT OF THE MATCH
Bethany Cullity recorded 17 digs in the match, which is a career-high for the freshman.
NOTEWORTHY
• Logan Page led the team with 12 kills and has now had three consecutive matches with double-digit kills.
• Page also had a hitting percentage of .529 and added four blocks, both career-highs.
• Reina Terry and Kiara Barrett had a combined 33 assists in the match. Terry led the team with 18 and Barrett had 15.
UP NEXT
Troy travels to Arkansas, for a pair of Sun Belt matches against Little Rock and Arkansas State. The Trojans will face Little Rock on Friday night at 6:30 p.m., and will take on Arkansas State on Saturday at 6 p.m.
