STATESBORO, Georgia โ Troy used a 13-2 run over the final five minutes of regulation to force overtime, but Georgia Southern was able to escape with a 93-88 victory Saturday afternoon in Sun Belt Conference action at Hanner Fieldhouse.

Georgia Southern (5-9, 1-3 Sun Belt) led by 15 at the half, but Troy used an 11-0 run to open the second half to pull within four, 51-47, with 17:47 remaining in the contest. On the following possession, Mike Hughes hit an off-balanced, desperation 3-pointer as the shot clock expired that propelled the Eagles on aย 21-8 run over the next eight minutes as they built a 12-point advantage.

Trailing by 11 with 5:09 to play, B.J. Miller hit a 3-pointer to start Troy's run to the finish line. A technical foul against Georgia Southern led to a trio of Trojan free throws to close the gap to six, and Jordon Varnado buried a 3-pointer with 3:39 remaining to pull Troy to within 80-77.

Miller brought the Trojans to within a point with a layup, and Hughes made 1-of-2 from the free throw line with 1:37 remaining to set up some heroics from Wesley Person. After both teams missed shots, Person drove down the right side of the lane and hit a running layup with 24 seconds left to tie the game at 81-81 and force overtime.

Troy (5-10, 0-4) scored first in the extra period, but Georgia Southern went on a mini 7-2 run to grab a three-point lead, which they didn't relinquish after hitting 3-of-4 from the free throw line down the stretch. Troy's last five losses have come by a combined 20 points with two going to overtime.

Person led four Trojans in double figures as he netted 19 points on 7-of-15 shooting, including a pair of 3-pointers. Miller poured in a career-high 17 points as he connected on 7-of-8 of his field goal attempts; the freshman guard also added three assists and a pair of rebounds.

Varnado and John Walton III just missed out on double-doubles as Varnado scored 18 points and pulled down nine rebounds, while Walton added 14 points and nine boards.

Hughes scored a game-high 22 points in addition to pulling down four rebounds to lead Georgia Southern. Tookie Brown added 19 points and five rebounds, while Jake Allsmiller and Ike Smith each scored 16 points.

The difference in the game came from beyond the arc where Georgia Southern hit on 9-of-28 (32.1 percent) of its attempts, while the Trojans connected on just 5-of-22 (22.7 percent).

The Eagles closed out the first half on a 17-4 run to build their 15-point (51-36) advantage heading into the break. Both teams shot 56 percent from the floor in the opening half, but the Eagles hit six 6-pointers compared to just one by the Trojans.

The Trojans return home next week for a pair of league games in Trojan Arena. Troy will host UT Arlington (12-2, 3-0) on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. and Texas State (7-5, 1-2) on Saturday at 4:15 p.m.
