ATLANTA – Troy outscored Georgia State by 15 points in the second half, but the Trojans fell just short of a miraculous comeback as the Panthers escaped with a 72-68 victory Thursday in Sun Belt Conference action at the GSU Sports Arena.
Georgia State (9-3, 2-1 Sun Belt), who hit eight of its first 12 shots in the game, built a 26-point lead with three minutes remaining in the first half before Troy (5-9, 0-3) began to chip away at the deficit.
Troy opened the game with just three field goals in its first 21 attempts, but closed the contest connecting on 18-of-33 (54.5 percent). Wesley Person led the Trojans with 21 points on 8-of-11 shooting from the floor – 5-of-8 from beyond the arc – and seven rebounds, while John Walton III added 16 points and seven boards.
Georgia State's lead was cut to 19, 38-19, at the break as Troy made its final three field goal attempts to close out the opening 20 minutes. The Trojans remained hot after the break as they knocked down their first two shots of the second half.
The Trojans got to the free throw line early in the second half and converted 8-of-10 attempts to pull within 12, 51-39, with 10:30 to play in the game on a 3-pointer by Person. Georgia State responded with an 8-0 run over the next two minutes to build a 19-point advantage.
Georgia State missed its final six shots and made just 1-of-9 to close out the game, but converted all 12 of its free throws over the final three minutes to thwart the Troy comeback.
Trailing by nine, 66-57, with 54 seconds remaining, Person buried a 3-pointer and Jeremy Hollimon followed with another trey after a pair of Panther free throws to pull Troy within five. After two more Georgia State free throws, Walton knocked down the first 3-pointer of his career to close the deficit to four, 70-66. Two more Georgia State free throws and a Person tip in set the final score.
Jeremy Hollowell led a trio of Panthers in double figures as he finished with a game-high 22 points after scoring 16 in the first half. Kevin Ware scored 13 of his 17 points in the opening half, while Isaiah Williams scored 13 of his 16 points in the second half.
The Trojans wrap up their brief two-game swing through Georgia on Saturday when they take on Georgia Southern (4-9, 0-3) in Statesboro; tipoff from Hanner Fieldhouse is scheduled for 4 p.m.
