Â
TROY, Alabama – South Alabama used a 21-8 run midway through the second half to rally past Troy, 66-58, Tuesday night in Sun Belt Conference action in Trojan Arena.
Â
Troy led by six at the half, 31-25, and a Jeremy Hollimon jumper gave the Trojans a 35-27 lead with 18:11 to play in the game. The Jaguars scored 21 of the game's next 29 points to pull in front 50-43.
Â
The Trojans (6-14, 1-8 Sun Belt) aided South Alabama's comeback with 10 turnovers in the second half after just two before the break. The Jaguars (8-12, 3-6) capitalized on Troy's mistakes turning those 10 turnovers into 11 points.
Â
Wesley Person led Troy with 15 points on 5-of-12 shooting from the floor and a game-high four 3-pointers. Hollimon got hot late for the Trojans as he scored eight of his 14 points in the final three-plus minutes of the game. Jordon Varnado scored 10 points – all in the first half – and pulled down a team-high seven rebounds to go along with three blocks.
Â
John Walton III added eight points, six rebounds and three assists, while B.J. Miller came off the bench to score seven points and dish out a team-best four assists.
Â
Georgi Boyanov led the Jaguars with 18 points and 10 rebounds; including a big 3-pointer that gave South Alabama a six-point lead with 15 seconds remaining. Ken Williams added 11 points despite hitting on just 3-of-12 field goal attempts and dished out eight assists, while Shaq Calhoun added 10 points off the bench.
Â
Hollimon drained a 3-pointer with 3:09 to play in the game, which capped a 6-0 run and pulled Troy to within two, 53-51. The Jags quickly stretched the lead back to six with a pair of free throws and a Williams layup before Hollimon drained another three to close the gap to three with 1:28 to play.
Â
Miller danced through the lane and connected on a reverse layup to get Troy to within three, 61-58, with 44 seconds remaining before Boyanov's game-clinching 3-pointer 29 seconds later.
Â
The Trojans have a quick turnaround as they host Appalachian State on Thursday night in Trojan Arena. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. and is the second game of a doubleheader with the Troy women.
