TROY, Alabama โ John Walton III recorded his sixth career double-double, but it was not enough as Appalachian State held off Troy, 75-71, in Sun Belt Conference action Thursday night in Trojan Arena.

Walton scored 18 points and pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds in addition to dishing out two assists and grabbing a pair of steals to lead the Trojans. Wesley Person dropped in a game-high 22 points, including four 3-pointers, while Jordon Varnado scored 10 points with five rebounds, two steals and two blocks.

Appalachian State (6-14, 4-5 Sun Belt) led by eight, 66-58, with 5:22 to play in the game before the Trojans (6-15, 1-9) went on a 10-2 run to tie the game at 68-all; Walton and Varnado each had four points during the run for Troy.

Frank Eaves, who entered the game as the Sun Belt's leading scorer with 21.4 points per game, gave the Mountaineers the lead for good with an old-fashioned 3-point play. Eaves finished with 18 points on 5-of-13 shooting from the floor but just 1-of-3 from beyond the arc; he entered the game fifth in the country with 3.6 3-pointers per game.

Jacob Lawson added 13 points and five rebounds off the bench for App State, while Griffin Kinney finished with nine points and 10 rebounds. The Mountaineers committed 22 turnovers in the game, but were able to overcome their ball handling issues with solid shooting from beyond the arc as they shot 57.1 (8-of-14) percent from 3-point range.

Varnado pulled the Trojans back within one with a layup and after the teams traded turnovers over the next three possessions, Ronshad Shabazz missed a pair of free throws with 25 seconds remaining. Still a one-point game, 71-70, Person drove the lane with six seconds remaining but couldn't get the shot to fall.

Eaves hit a pair of free throws to extend the lead to three and App State immediately fouled Person to send him to the line instead of allowing Troy the opportunity to get off a 3-pointer. Person made 1-of-2 from the line and Shabazz hit a pair of free throws to close out the game.

The Trojans struggled from the floor as they connected on just 37.7 percent of their shots, but hit on 45.5 percent (5-of-11) from beyond the arc. Four Trojans finished with a pair of steals as Troy had 10 on the night, while Daniel Peace dished out a team-high four assists.

In a game which featured eight lead changes and four ties, App State jumped out to an early seven-point lead and held that advantage until a Jaro Moravek alley-oop from Peace gave the Trojans a 23-22 lead with 5:27 to play in the opening half.

App State led by as many as six over the rest of the first half and took a 35-31 lead into the break thanks in large part to six 3-pointers on just 10 attempts.

Troy returns to action next Thursday at Little Rock when it opens a two-game swing through Arkansas.
