Troy Women Lose Second Straight Late Lead
1/23/2016 6:38:00 PM | Basketball (W)
LAFAYETTE, Louisiana – It was a battle for second place, and for the second straight game the Troy women's basketball lost a late lead, this time falling to UL Lafayette, 56-53, at the Cajundome on Saturday evening.
Troy (10-7, 5-3) got a career-high 17 points from Ta'Kierra Gibbs, including 13 in the first half as the Trojans led by as many as 15 points in the second quarter.
The Trojans led by 12 points at halftime and by six, 41-35, entering the fourth quarter. However, the Trojans committed seven turnovers and got off just nine shots in the fourth quarter as UL Lafayette (14-3, 7-1) outscored the Trojans, 21-12.
Jaylyn Gordon's fifth 3-pointer of the game tied the score, 48-48, with 5:07 to go. From there Troy made just two more shots and turned it over three times, including when it was down 53-50 with possession and just 17 seconds to go.
In a game that put the Sun Belt's top offense against its top defense, UL Lafayette kept things at its pace and remained perfect at home this season. Both sides shot poorly as Troy hit 35 percent (19-of-54) and UL Lafayette shot 33 percent (19-of-57).
The Trojans, who make a Sun Belt best 8.0 3-pointers per game, took just nine on Saturday and made 4-of-9. The Ragin' Cajuns hit 6-of-16 from deep, including five from Gordon who scored a game-high 23 points.
Troy finished with 23 turnovers while the Ragin' Cajuns had 16. Troy outrebounded the Cajuns, 41-37, but got outscored in the paint, 22-14.
Gibbs entered Troy's starting lineup for the first time since November and rewarded that decision with 13 first half points. ArJae' Saunders also scored eight of her 10 points in the first half to help Troy to its early lead.
They were the only two in double figures for Troy as Ashley Beverly Kelley hit just 3-of-12 shots and scored eight points while Caitlyn Ramirez also posted eight for the Trojans.
Troy has played just three games this season that were decided by six points or less, and two came this week in losses at ULM and UL Lafayette. Troy is 0-3 in those games this season after going 9-4 last seaseon.
Troy now faces a Tuesday night contest as South Alabama will visit Trojan Arena. That will be the third of four games in eight days for the Trojans who will also host Appalachian State on Thursday.
