Troy Women Go Cold, Drop Third Straight Close Game
1/26/2016 8:10:00 PM | Basketball (W)
TROY, Alabama – The Troy women's basketball team was ice cold early, and not much better late, in a 75-71 loss to rival South Alabama at Trojan Arena on Tuesday.
Troy (10-8, 5-4) lost a third straight game for the first time in over two years, and all three have been by four points or less. The Trojans shot just 3-of-14 in the first quarter and 27 percent in the first half. However, the game was tied at the break as Troy pressured the Jaguars all night.
South Alabama (8-10, 4-5) finished with 32 turnovers, but shot an astronomical 18-of-20 in the second half. Thanks to the Jaguars turnovers, the Trojans took twice as many shots over the final two quarters, but hit just 14-of-40.
Despite the huge discrepancy in shooting percentages, Troy led after three quarters, 51-50. However, South Alabama opened the fourth quarter on a 6-0 run and Troy never pulled even. The Trojans had possession, trailing by just two points, 71-69, with 30 seconds to go, but missed an open layup, something that haunted Troy all night.
ArJae' Saunders' led three Trojans in double figures with 15 points. Ashley Beverly Kelley with 11 and Caitlyn Ramirez with 10 were the other two, but Troy's top two scorers on the season were just a combined 10-of-34 on the night.
Troy finished the night shooting 32 percent (23-of-73) for its second worst shooting performance of the season. The Trojans 3-point effort of 19 percent (4-of-21) was also the second worst of the season. South Alabama shot 60 percent (28-of-47) for its best effort of the season.
South Alabama outrebounded Troy by just two, 39-37, despite the shooting percentage numbers. Troy grabbed 15 offensive boards and outscored South Alabama, 20-5, in second-chance points.
Marquita Daniels scored a game-high 17 points for South Alabama and led four Jaguars in double-figure scoring. The win was South Alabama's first in the series since the 2012-13 season as Troy came in with five straight wins against the Jaguars.
Troy now faces a quick turnaround as Appalachian State visits Trojan Arena on Thursday for what will be Troy's fourth game in eight days. The Trojans and Mountaineers will tip off at 5:15 p.m.
