Men’s Hoops Hosts Texas State on Saturday

TROY, Alabama – The Troy men's basketball team wraps up a brief two-game homestand on Saturday when it hosts Texas State in Trojan Arena at 4:15 p.m. The game is the second of a doubleheader with the Troy women, who play at 2 p.m.

Troy (5-11, 0-5 Sun Belt) jumped out to an early 15-point lead over UL Arlington on Thursday night, but the Mavericks ended the first half on a 26-4 run on their way to a 90-63 victory.
Jordon Varnado led the Trojans with 19 points and eight rebounds in the game and has now scored in double figures 14 times this season and has 18 or more points in eight different games. The Troy freshman is averaging 16.6 points and 8.1 rebounds on the year, tallies that rank seventh and fourth in the Sun Belt, respectively.
Sophomore Wesley Person continues to lead the Trojans on the year with 17.0 points and 3.1 3-pointers per game. He will be looking to bounce back from Thursday as he finished with just six points against the Mavericks. Person has hit a 3-pointer in all 45 of his career games, which is the longest active streak in the country.
The Trojans continued to hit from beyond the arc as they sank 10 3-pointers Thursday night. Troy ranks fourth in the league with 7.6 3-pointers per game and second in league games with 8.4 makes against Sun Belt foes. The Trojans are third in the league averaging 72.2 points per game in their five Sun Belt games.
Paced by Daniel Peace and Jeremy Hollimon, the Trojans have been active on the defensive end of the court as they swipe an average of 7.7 steals per game, which is the third most in the league. Peace, who also ranks fifth in the Sun Belt in assists, is fourth in the league with 1.8 steals per game and Hollimon is close behind in ninth with 1.4 per game.
John Walton III has been Troy's third-leading point producer in Sun Belt play as he is scoring at a 10.0 per game clip. The Trojans' lone senior, Walton, is fifth in the league averaging 7.9 rebounds per game.
Texas State (8-5, 2-2) snapped a two-game losing skid with a 78-67 win at South Alabama on Thursday. Emani Gant led the Bobcats with 22 points and 14 rebounds against the Jaguars; he also leads Texas State on the season with 15.1 points and 7.6 rebounds per game.
The Bobcats enter Saturday's game third in the league and sixth in the country allowing just 60.3 points per game. Texas State does most of its work on the offensive end inside the 3-point line, as they are last in the league with only 4.4 3-pointers per game.
Texas State has played fairly well away from San Marcos with a 3-4 record on the road this year with wins over McNeese State and Prairie View A&M in addition to Thursday's victory at South Alabama.
Following Saturday's game, the Trojans hit the road for a pair of games in Louisiana next week. Troy plays at ULM on Thursday night and at UL Lafayette on Saturday.
