ATHENS, Georgia - It was much closer than the score indicated as the Troy men's tennis team fell to Florida State, 4-0, in the first round of the NCAA Championships on Friday afternoon at the Dan Migall Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga.
Troy (25-7), the 57th-ranked team in the nation, was making the second NCAA Championships appearance in program history while Florida State, ranked 27th, was making 13th straight appearance in the tournament.
Florida State (20-10) won at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles, both by 8-5 scores, to take the opening point. When those matches finished, Troy's Giovani Samaha and Pablo Moreno were in a tiebreak against No. 16 Benjamin Lock and Marco Nunez.
In singles play, the Seminoles won the first set in all six matches, but the Trojans fought back to force a third set in four of them. Florida State did take a 3-0 lead with wins at No. 4 and No. 2 by scores of 6-4, 6-1 and 6-3, 6-3, respectively.
At No. 3 singles, Andy Lau fought off one match point in the third set, but couldn't fend off another as he fell to Nunez, 6-1, 3-6, 6-4. Gabriel Dias at No. 1, Moreno at No. 5 and Samaha at No. 6 were all even or ahead in their third set when the match was clinched.
Troy's 2015 season featured the second Sun Belt championship in program history and a program record 25 wins. Troy was one of just three teams to enter the NCAA Championships with 25 wins, joining Ohio State and Illinois. Troy's 17-win improvement over last season was also the nation's best.
With the win, Florida State moves on to the NCAA Second Round where it will meat the winner of No. 8 Georgia and Winthrop.
