5/7/2015 4:38:00 PM | Baseball
TROY, Alabama – The Troy University baseball team is jockeying for position in the Sun Belt Conference standings and will host Georgia State in a critical three-game series at Riddle-Pace Field beginning Friday at 6 p.m.
Saturday's contest, scheduled for 3 p.m., will feature a pregame presentation in honor of head coach Bobby Pierce, who will retire at the end of the season.
Troy's nine seniors will be honored prior to Sunday's series finale. The game is slated for a 1 p.m. start. Live video, audio and stats are available on TroyTrojans.com and WTBF 94.7 FM will carry the radio broadcast.
The Trojans (26-23, 14-10 Sun Belt) enter the weekend fifth in the league table but just three games behind conference leaders South Alabama. Georgia State (28-20, 14-8) sits in second and 1.5 games ahead of Troy. Georgia State took two-of-three games from the Trojans last season in Atlanta, though Troy owns a 25-9 all-time series lead.
Panthers head coach Greg Frady returns to Riddle-Pace Field as a head coach for the first time. Frady was a member of the 1986 Division II National Championship team and a teammate of Troy assistant coach Mark Smartt.
Grant Bennett (8-3, 2.69) will lead the Trojans into the weekend on Friday. Bennett leads the league in victories and stands fifth in strikeouts with 66 and sixth in ERA. Lucas Brown (5-2, 2.50) will take the mound on Saturday while left-hander Austin Crook (4-0, 5.52) will close out the series with a start on Sunday.
Nathan Bates (4-2, 4.33) and southpaw Kenny Anderson (5-2, 4.64) will counter for the Panthers, the team has yet to name a Sunday starter.
Offensively, David Hall looks to extend his 15-game hitting streak while Logan Hill, who failed to reach base in Wednesday's loss to Florida A&M snapping a 21-game streak, aims to begin a new run.
Two of the top freshman in the league will square of as Troy outfielder Reid Long and GSU shortstop Justin Jones have played key roles for their teams this season. Jones leads all Sun Belt freshmen in batting average, hits, and runs scored while Long paces all freshmen with seven home runs.
