TROY, Alabama – The Troy University baseball team couldn't dig themselves out of an early hole, falling to Florida A&M 6-0 at Riddle-Pace Field on Wednesday.
The Rattlers (20-23) scored six runs in the first inning and used six pitchers to shutout Troy. It is the second time the Trojans have been held scoreless at home this season as Southern Miss pitched a clean sheet on March 1.
Florida A&M jumped on Troy starter Corey Childress (3-5) early. Jared Walker reached on a catcher's interference call to leadoff the game and Alec Wong followed with a single. Ryan Kennedy opened the scoring on the next pitch with a two-RBI double. After an infield single and a Troy throwing error allowed another run to cross, Michael Birdsong his a three-run home run over the wall in right to give the Rattlers the 6-0 advantage. Ben Tidwell, Marc Skinner, Tucker Simpson, Robert Harris and Jeremy McGowan combined to toss the remaining 8 1/3 frames without allowing a run.
Troy (26-23) could never get anything going offensively, grounding into three double plays and managing just five hits in the game. The loss drops the team to 2-9 in midweek games on the season.
The Trojans look to rebound over the weekend as Georgia State visits Riddle-Pace Field for a three-game series set to begin on Friday at 6 p.m.
Saturday's contest, scheduled for a 3 p.m. start, will feature a pregame presentation in honor of head coach Bobby Pierce, who will retire at the end of the season.
