TROY, Alabama – The Troy University baseball is set to open a three-game Sun Belt Conference tilt against Georgia Southern starting on Friday at 6 p.m. Game two on Saturday is slated for a 6 p.m. start with Sunday's finale scheduled for 1 p.m. Live video, audio and stats for all three games will be streamed on TroyTrojans.com. WTBF 94.7 FM will carry the radio broadcasts.
The Trojans are looking to snap an eight-game losing streak. The program has won 214 of its last 303 games at Riddle-Pace Field and has won 72 percent of its home games all-time.
Freshman Corey Childress (2-0, 2.77) will make his fifth start of the season in Friday's opener. He tossed six innings in the Troy's extra-inning loss to UL Lafayette last Friday. Georgia Southern will counter with left-handed sophomore Evan Challenger (1-0, 1.83). In his last start, Challenger allowed just one run in five innings of work in a 5-4 win over Appalachian State.
Grant Bennett (2-1, 2.49) and RHP Tripp Sheppard (1-1, 3.46) will square off on Saturday while the Eagles will send LHP Connor Simmons (1-0, 0.93) to the bump on Sunday. Troy has yet to announce a Sunday starter.
Georgia Southern (11-7, 3-0) is coming off a pair of lopsided midweek losses. The Eagles fell at Georgia Tech, 22-6, on Tuesday before being knocked off by North Florida, 13-3, on Wednesday. GS swept Appalachian State in its only conference series of the season.
Trevin Hall has been red-hot at the plate of late. In his last ten games, Hall is batting .475 with five doubles, two home runs, nine runs scored and nine RBIs. He enters the weekend riding a seven-game hitting streak.
Clay Holcomb and Jeremy McGowan continue to climb in the Troy history books. Holcomb stole his 56th career base on Wednesday against Jacksonville State, moving him into a tie with Jeff Brinson for seventh all-time. Holcomb has also reached base safely to lead off the last five games. McGowan has made 61 career appearances, with is eighth most all-time.
Entering the weekend, reliever Lucas Brown has pitched 12 consecutive scoreless innings.
The Trojans are 5-0 all-time against Georgia Southern including a 4-0 mark at Riddle-Pace Field. The last meeting between the teams came in 2007 in the Wiregrass Baseball Classic (Dothan, Ala.); a 16-10 Troy victory.
