Troy Softball Splits in Day One of Bulldog Invitational

ATHENS, Georgia - The Troy softball team split a pair of games on Friday in the first day of action the Bulldog Invitational. The Trojans won the first game against Elon 6-2, before falling to SIU Edwardsville, 10-0, at Jack Turner Stadium.

Troy 6, Elon 2
Â
Troy (3-4) scored six unanswered runs against Elon for a comeback win, 6-2, handing the Phoenix their first loss of the season.

Elon (3-1) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but the Trojans came back to cut the deficit in half in the second inning when Meg Willis took a one-out pitch over the scoreboard in left field.

Troy scored four runs in the fifth inning, which started with a sacrifice fly by Michelle Phelps, to tie the game at 2-2. Next, Khadija Neely hit a towering fly ball that was dropped by the Phoenix left fielder, which scored two more, giving Troy its first lead of the contest at 4-2. Neely later scored on a wild pitch to extend Troy's lead to 5-2.

A Phelps RBI fielder's choice gave Troy an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Kate Benton led the Trojans at the plate as she went 2-for-3 with two singles.

Ashley Rainey (3-0) pitched lights out after the first inning earning the complete-game victory. Rainey, on the day, gave up two runs, both unearned, on eight hits while striking out three.

Troy faced OVC Pitcher of the Week, Haley Chambers, in the second game of the Bulldog Invitational.

Troy threatened in the early part of the game when Benton hit a double down the left field line with only one out in the third inning, but a strikeout and a fly out ended the threat.

Benton had the only two hits for Troy in the game, going 2-for-2 with a single and a double.

SIU Edwardsville (5-1) was led by Chambers (4-0) who fanned 13 Trojan batters on the day.

Sara Mock (0-3) took a tough loss for the Trojans pitching 6.2 innings, giving up six runs on 11 hits.

The Trojans face SIU Edwardsville again on Saturday at 2 p.m. CT and then take on host No. 10/9 Georgia at 4:30 p.m. CT.
