Troy Baseball Set to Host Northwestern State in Season Opener
2/12/2015 3:50:00 PM | Baseball
TROY, Ala. – The Troy University baseball team will open its 2015 season on Friday as Northwestern State visits Riddle-Pace Field for a four-game series.
Friday's opener is set for a 6 p.m. first pitch. Saturday's doubleheader will begin at 1 p.m. and Sunday's finale is also slated for a 1 p.m. start. Video of all four games will be streamed LIVE on TroyTrojans.com. Free audio broadcasts will be available for Friday and Sunday's games and will also be air on 94.7 WTBF.
Troy enters the season looking to rebound from a 25-32 campaign a year ago. Head coach Bobby Pierce kicks off his final season in the Trojan dugout after announcing his retirement in August. Pierce is just 15 wins shy of passing Chase Riddle on the school's all-time wins list. As an NCAA head coach, he is just five wins shy of 700 career victories. Pierce's .637 career winning percentage currently stands fifth among NCAA active coaches.
Sun Belt Conference Freshman of the Year and All-American reliever Marc Skinner returns for his sophomore season. Skinner, a Preseason All-Sun Belt selection, was 6-1 on the mound with a league-best 1.52 ERA.
Preseason All-Sun Belt designated hitter David Hall led the Trojans a year ago with a .344 average, nine home runs and 48 RBIs.
Freshman Corey Childress is slated to take the ball in Friday's season opener and would become the first freshman in Troy recorded history to take the bump to kick off a season.
Senior left-hander Ben Tidwell will get the nod in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader. Tidwell was 3-5 last season and split time between the bullpen and a starting role. Junior college transfer Grant Bennett will likely get the start in game two. Tucker Simpson is scheduled to become the third Trojan to make his debut on the mound as he is penciled in as Sunday's starter.
Northwestern State will counter on the mound with brothers Adam and Josh Oller on Friday and Saturday. Game two on Saturday will see Evan Tidwell while Jeffrey Stovall is set to make his debut for the Decons on Sunday.
Troy has won 10 of its last 12 season openers including its last six season opening contests at home.
The series marks the first meetings between Troy and Northwestern State.
