Troy Women Struggle Early in Loss at UAB

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama – The Troy women's basketball team struggled out of the gate and never recovered in an 89-67 loss to UAB at Bartow Arena on Friday night.
Troy (4-4) committed seven first-quarter turnovers and forced just one as UAB took a 25-10 lead after the first quarter. The Blazers used an 18-0 run to take a 20-4 lead at one point.
The Trojans trailed by as many as 30 points late in the third quarter before UAB started to struggle with Troy's pressure defense. The Trojans cut the lead down to as few as 17 points in the fourth quarter, but never got any closer than that.
Ashley Beverly Kelley led the Trojans with 16 points, scoring 12 of those in the fourth quarter when the Trojans outscored the Blazers (6-4), 22-16. Caitlyn Ramirez was also in double figures for Troy with 13 points.
Chelsee Black led UAB with 31 points while Deanna Kuzmanic scored 19, including 16 in the first half.
Troy returns to the court on Monday when it closes non-conference play at Southeastern Louisiana at 7 p.m. at the University Center in Hammond, La.
