Troy Women Struggle in Loss at Vanderbilt
12/10/2015 9:56:00 PM | Basketball (W)
NASHVILLE, Tennessee – The nation's top offense met one of the top defenses, and on this night the defense won as the Troy women's basketball team fell to Vanderbilt, 97-43, at Memorial Gym on Thursday night.
Troy (3-3) started out poorly, committing 10 turnovers and shooting just 3-of-14 in the first quarter as Vanderbilt (8-2) raced out to a 27-8 lead after the first frame.
The Trojans partially cleaned up the turnovers, but the shooting percentage never got better, and the Commodores shot 57 percent (37-of-65) on the night to slowly grow the lead throughout the game.
Troy played its best quarter in the fourth, forcing Vanderbilt into some turnovers early, but the Trojans still only shot 5-of-17 against the Commodores in that frame and got barely outscored, 19-16.
Amanda Mendoza scored 10 points to lead Troy, hitting two 3-pointers as the Trojans hit just 5-of-20 from long range. Troy, who entered first in the NCAA scoring over 97.4 points per game, shot 22 percent (14-of-64) overall after coming in with a 50.5 shooting percentage on the season.
The Trojans finished with 25 turnovers while forcing Vanderbilt into 17. The Commodores, who won their sixth straight game, outscored Troy 31-9 in points off of turnovers.
Vanderbilt had four score in double figures, led by Christa Reed who had 19 points thanks in large part to 5-of-6 from long range. The Commodores had three players post six assists or more.
Next up for the Trojans is a game at Alabama State on Tuesday. Tipoff at the Acadome is set for 6 p.m.
