Trojans Edged by Bulldogs in Denton

DENTON, Texas – A 3-pointer by Samford's Darius Jones-Gibson gave the Bulldogs an 83-79 victory over the Troy (2-2) men's basketball team in the opening game of the Mean Green Showcase, hosted by North Texas. With the game knotted at 79, the Bulldogs managed to sink a trey with 10 seconds remaining, and the Trojans could not recover.

Jeremy Hollimon's career night couldn't propel the Trojans to victory at the Super Pit. Hollimon shot 8-of-15 on the night, including 3-of-6 from downtown, on his way to a career-high 23 points.

Jordon Varnado, who leads all freshmen in the NCAA in scoring, finished with 19 points, shooting 6-of-8 in the game while playing limited minutes due to injury. Wesley Person poured in 14 points for the Trojans, shooting 4-of-10. John Walton III led the Trojans on the glass with eight rebounds.

The Trojans worked their way back from a 16-point first-half deficit to make it a game, at 51 all, in the second half thanks to a 16-7 run, but were unable to secure the final lead.

The game, which had nine lead changes and 11 ties, was a game of back-and-forth play in the second half. Troy, who never led by more than four, had its largest lead of the night with 18:41 to go in the first.

The Trojans quickly opened up the game with a 9-5 lead. However, Samford had an answer as it claimed the lead, and then went on a 10-4 run to take a 23-18 lead. After trading buckets, the Bulldogs managed a 10-2 run, which put them up 41-25, its largest lead of the contest.

Troy responded with its own 7-2 run to close the gap to 44-35 heading into the break.

Free throw shooting plagued the Trojans, who shot just 23-of-35 (65.7 percent) on the night, including two misses with the score tied at 79-79 with 36 seconds remaining. The Samford bench outscored the Trojan bench, 35-10.

Troy outscored Samford 44-39 in the second half, in thanks to shooting 56.5 percent (13-of-23) from the floor, and 3-of-5 from beyond the arc.
Samford had four players in double figures and was led by Gibson-Jones, who tallied 16 points on the night, shooting 5-of-13 from the field. Wyatt Walker reeled in a game-high 12 rebounds, four on the offensive glass.Â
