DENTON, Texas –A 22-3 run proved to be too much to overcome as the Troy men's basketball team fell to Idaho, 69-63, at the Super Pit in the second game of the Mean Green Showcase, hosted by North Texas.
Troy trailed by as many as 20 points, but was able to cut it to five with 15.6 seconds to go as they went on a 19-2 run to close out the final 4:23 of the game.
Wesley Person led all with 27 points. The reigning Sun Belt Freshman of the Year shot 9-of-19 from the floor, including four 3-pointers. John Walton III finished with a season-high 16 points, shooting 4-of-6 from the floor, while reeling in a team-high eight rebounds. Freshman B.J. Miller ended with his first night in double figures, a career-high 10 points, shooting 4-of-7 from the floor.
After Troy (2-3) tied the game at 36-all with 15:47 to play, the Vandals spurted out on a 22-3 run to take a 58-39 lead with 8:22 to play, which proved to be too much for the Trojans to recover from.
To open the game, Troy took its lone lead, 4-2, at the 17:17 mark, for 26 seconds. After a pair of runs by both squads, the game was knotted at 16-all with 8:25 remaining in the half. Back and forth play enabled the Vandals to lead at the break, 29-26.
After trading buckets to start the second half, the Trojans tied it for the final time of the night at 36-all with 15:51 to go in the game on a free throw from Person. The Vandals responded with a 22-3 run over the next 11 minutes, to lead the Trojans 66-46, with 4:41 to go.
Idaho (4-1) had three in double figures, led by Victor Sanders, who scored all 15 points of his points in the second half, in thanks to a quartet of 3-pointers. Nahshon George finished with a game-high 10 rebounds, eight coming in the first half alone. Arkadiy Mkrtychyan also finished in double figures with 10 points.
After struggling from the charity stripe this season, Troy finished 15-of-19 from the line (78.9 percent), in large thanks to Person's perfect 5-of-5 and Walton's 8-of-11 showing.
The Trojans return to the court tomorrow, as they play their final game of the Mean Green Showcase against host North Texas at 4:30 p.m. The final game will be broadcast by Barry McKnight on the Troy Sports Radio Network, and can also be viewed online at MeanGreenSports.com.
