Troy Falls to Georgia Southern in Home Finale
11/14/2015 6:54:00 PM | Football
TROY, Alabama – Troy raced to a quick 10-0 lead, but Georgia Southern answered with 45 consecutive points en route to a 45-10 victory over the Trojans in Sun Belt Conference action Saturday at Veterans Memorial Stadium. The Trojans honored 21 seniors prior to the game.
Rotating Kevin Ellison and Favian Upshaw at quarterback and using multiple running backs, Georgia Southern's shotgun running game was methodical, converting on 7-of-15 third downs and 4-of-4 fourth downs while running for 325 yards.
"If they ever got to third and medium or third and long, they ran the speed option," Troy head coach Neal Brown said. "Everyone in the stadium knew what was coming and we didn't play responsible football."
Troy (3-7, 2-4 Sun Belt) jumped out to the early 10-point advantage after a Jed Solomon 20-yard field goal on the Trojans' opening possession of the game and a 19-yard fumble return for a touchdown by Demetrius Cain on the Eagles' first play of the game.
Cain's score was Troy's fourth defensive touchdown of the season, which is the most since 2007. It also marked the first time in Troy's FBS history that it has returned three fumbles for a touchdown in a season.
The Eagles (7-2, 5-1) answered with an 11-play, 66-yard touchdown drive, capped by a Matt Breida 3-yard run. Following an interception of Brandon Silvers by Caleb Williams, the Eagles erased the double-digit deficit before the first quarter ended with a 23-yard field goal by Younghoe Koo.
Tied at 10-10, Georgia Southern's Myles Campbell took an option pitch around right end and raced 20-yards into the end zone. It took Georgia Southern four plays to gain 80 yards, claiming its first lead of the game. The Eagles scored again late in the first half to take a 24-10 lead at the break.
The Eagles controlled the clock and the score in the second half with drives of 8:20 and 12:01, keeping the Trojan offense off the field. In the second half, Troy ran 13 plays and had 54 yards of offense with three first downs.
"They were grown men," Brown said. "They lined up on offense and ran the dive play straight down our throats.
"We got beat by a better football team – a better more physical team than us," Brown added. "They played with more discipline than we did.
The Eagles' opening drive of the second half went for 83 yards in 15 plays for a touchdown. All 15 plays were runs, accounting for 90 yards. L.A. Ramsey ran it the final two yards up the middle to extend the score to 31-10.
Georgia Southern followed with a 17-play, 75-yard drive to extend the score to 38-10. Riyahd Jones returned a fumble 61 yards for the final score late in the fourth quarter.
"They had the ball 43 minutes (42:55)," Brown said. "They made third downs and fourth downs. We had very few opportunities. Like I said, they were more physical than us and stronger than us in the game."
Troy will take next weekend off before beginning a two-game road trip to close out the season. The Trojans will play at Georgia State on Nov. 27 in the Georgia Dome.
