TROY, Alabama – Fátima Fernández Cano represented Troy and Spain this past week at the Spirit International Amateur Golf Championship at the Whispering Pines Golf Club in Trinity, Texas.
Â
Established in 2001, The Spirit International Amateur Golf Championship is a world-class amateur golf event featuring 20 countries from six continents. Each country is represented by their two best men and two best women players. Â The Spirit truly showcases the stars of tomorrow; past Spirit Champions include current professional tour stars Lorena Ochoa, Brandt Snedeker, Paula Creamer and Martin Kaymer.
Â
The Spirit is a biennial event alternating years with the World Amateur Team Championships. All 80 participants enjoy an Olympic-like experience including Opening Ceremonies, International Village accommodations, festive dinner parties, Closing Ceremonies and a 72-hole golf event where the world's best amateur golfers compete for gold medals.
Â
Cano and Maria Parra Luque helped lead Spain to a tie for third in the 20-team women's field. The duo shot 15-under par over the three rounds in the best ball format. In the combined men's and women's team competition, Spain finished third at 33-under par. Cano tied for 14th in the field of 40 women's golfers with nine birdies over the three rounds.
Â
Cano is the reigning Sun Belt Conference Golfer of the Month after her victory at the Chris Banister Golf Classic.
