TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Sun Belt Conference champion Troy women's golf team went through its final preparations for the NCAA East Regional as the Trojans played their practice round at the SouthWood Golf Course in Tallahassee, Fla., Wednesday afternoon.
"It looks really great out here and the condition of the course is amazing," head coach Bart Barnes said. "I thought the course was pretty fair. It presents an interesting challenge as there are some birdie opportunities out there and some really hard pars as well.
"I think these girls are really excited about this opportunity. Obviously they come in as champions after a great week at conference and they are pleased with that, but not satisfied with that. They are really looking to keep it going. I don't think these young ladies are ready for their season to be over and they are looking for an NCAA Championship berth."
Troy, the No. 21 seed in the regional, will be in the afternoon wave of tee times and will hit the course at 12:10 p.m. (CDT). The Trojans are grouped with Sun Belt foe Texas State and the College of Charleston. The top eight teams from each of the three regional sites advances to the NCAA Championship.
The Trojans will have a little extra motivation as they will be playing with Texas State. Bobcats' head coach Mike Akers offered some bulletin board material after Troy defeated Texas State by six shots at the Sun Belt Championship as was quoted as saying, "sometimes the best team does not win and that was the case this week."
Taylor McGraw will be the first one on the course for the Trojans and she has the third-best stroke average on the team with a 77.27 overall average and a 76.88 average in the spring. Langley Vannoy, who will be the next Trojan to tee off, has been strong out of the gate all season with a 75.89 average in the first round.
"We know some holes that we really need to capitalize on and some holes we know we need to take our medicine and play smart," Vannoy said. "As long as we keep that in mind as we play tomorrow, I think we are going to do really well."
Freshman Becca Horner carries a 77.13 average into the NCAA East Regional – second best on the team – and will tee off third for the Trojans. Horner finished eighth at the Sun Belt Championship and has three top-10 finishes this season.
The Trojans most-improved golfer in the spring, Brooke Spinks, is slotted into the number two spot in the lineup. Spinks finished in a tie for third at the Sun Belt Championship and has improved her stroke average by 2.16 shots from the fall to the spring.
Sun Belt Freshman of the Year Fátima Fernández Cano will hold down the top spot in the Troy lineup at SouthWood. Cano brings a 75.77 stroke average with her to the NCAA East Regional following her individual title at the Sun Belt Championship.
