AUBURN, Ala. – The Troy baseball team's offensive woes continued as the Trojans fell to Auburn 6-0 at Plainsman Park on Tuesday.
After being shutout for the first time all season on Sunday by UL Lafayette, Troy failed to score a run in consecutive games for the first time since 2011 when Middle Tennessee State held the Trojans scoreless in back-to-back games.
The Trojans were held to just five hits while Auburn pounded out 14 hits including four doubles. Chase Davidson (1-1) started the game took the loss on the mound going 1 1/3 innings allowing three runs on six hits.
Facing eight different Auburn pitchers, Troy didn't have many chances, nor could they take advantage of the ones created. Trailing 3-0, Ali Knowles picked up Troy's first hit with one out in the third inning and advanced to second on a balk. A strikeout and ground ball ended the inning and the threat.
With one out in the fifth, Matthew Howard doubled and Nick Masonia followed with a single to left field. The Auburn left fielder bobbled the ball and Masonia tried to take second base but was thrown out. The Tigers would get a fly ball to end the frame.
The Trojans best shot to plate a run came in the eighth inning when Knowles led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a passed ball. Justin Hancock hit a ground ball in the hole that was knocked down by the shortstop for an infield single. A fielder's choice followed by a double play thwarted another scoring opportunity.
Troy will return home to host Alabama A&M on Wednesday at 6 p.m. before hosting Western Kentucky in a three-game series over the weekend.
