Box Score
TROY, Ala. – Matt Shortall singled up the middle scoring Eric Tate in the eighth inning to lift UT Arlington to a 6-5 victory over Troy on Sunday at Riddle-Pace Field. The decision handed UTA the series win as the Trojans fall to 21-24 overall on the season and 8-11 in Sun Belt Conference play.
Trailing 5-2 in the fifth inning, the Troy rallied to tie the game. Jakob Nixon, Garrett Pitts and David Hall all singled home runs in the frame, but the UTA bullpen would hold Troy scoreless for the next four innings to lead the team to the win.
Troy took the lead in the first inning on a David Hall RBI single. Hall would finish 3-for-5 on the day and 8-for-14 for the series with nine RBIs and four runs scored. After UTA tied the game in the second, Trevin Hall hit his sixth home run of the year – a solo shot to left field. It was the first of three hits on the day for Hall, as he would single in both the sixth and eighth inning.
The Mavericks (20-24, 11-10) plated four runs in the fifth inning on a two-RBI triple from Levi Scott and a two-run home run by John Michael Twichell. The teams combined for 31 hits but stranded 23 runners. Troy used six pitchers in the losing effort, the most since six pitchers combined to defeated Florida A&M on Feb. 25.
William Shell (3-3) took the loss after pitching to just four batters in the eighth. Jacob Moreland (1-2) allowed three hits in one inning of relief but was able to take home the win. Chad Nack earned his second save of the year for the Mavericks.
Troy is scheduled to play its final non-conference game of the season on Tuesday as UAB pays a visit to Riddle-Pace Field. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
