TROY, Ala. – Game time for the suspended game with Alabama State has been set for 6 p.m. at Riddle-Pace Field on Wednesday. Following the completion of the contest, there will be a 30-minute break before the start of the regularly scheduled nine-inning game.
Â
Troy was leading the suspended game 8-5 in the top of the eighth inning at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex when rain halted play.
Â
Troy fell behind 2-0 when Branden Castro plated two runs on a single up the middle in the second inning off Troy starter Jesse Nelson. Nelson would not make it out of the inning giving way to Levi Tate, who recorded the final out stranding the bases loaded.
Â
The Trojans tied the game in the third when Garrett Pitts hit a slow bouncer to shortstop, the ball rolled under the ASU defenders' glove allowing Tyler Vaughn and Clay Holcomb to score. The play extended Pitts' reached base streak to 17 games.
Â
The Hornets retook the lead in the bottom half of the third, but the Trojans struck for four runs in the fourth to build a sizeable advantage. Kyle Brown walked to lead off the inning before Nick Masonia attempted to sacrifice him to second but a bad throw allowed both base runners to advance safely. Justin Hancock walked to load the bases before Vaughn also drew a free pass driving in a run. One batter later, Garrett Pitts extended his hitting streak to 11 games with a 2-RBI single. Trevin Hall followed with an RBI single of his own to stretch Troy's lead to 6-3.
Â
The Trojans would add two more runs in the seventh when Hancock doubled to center scoring Masonia and Vaughn singled home Hancock two pitches later.
