Box Score
MOBILE, Ala. – The Troy University baseball team fell to South Alabama 2-1 in 10 innings on Saturday at Stanky Field.
Â
Troy (10-8, 1-1) starter Shane McCain turned in his fifth quality start in five outings pitching eight innings allowing just one run on five hits though he did not factor into the decision.
Â
South Alabama (10-8, 1-1) put the winning run on base with two outs in the tenth with a single from Bud Collura. After a wild pitch advanced him to second, Cole Gleason lined a 2-2 pitch into center field to drive in Collura and hand the Jaguars the win.
Â
Troy scored its lone run in the second inning. David Hall singled to lead off the inning and two batters later, Nick Masonia singled through the left side to plate the run. Hall would finish the game 2-for-4. South Alabama answered in the bottom half when Collura led off with a single and Gleason doubled off the wall in left field to tie the game.
Â
The Trojans looked like they would break the tie in the eighth when Clay Holcomb hit a ground ball down the first base line. The ball hit the umpire signaling the ball fair and bounced towards second base holding Holcomb to a single. Justin Hancock struck out but the ball slipped away from the South Alabama catcher Matt Wojciechowski. Holcomb reached second easily but attempted to advance to third when the ball skipped into a corner near the Troy dugout. Wojciechoski was able to throw Holcomb out at third and South Alabama escaped the inning unharmed.
Â
Jeremy McGowan (1-2) pitched the final 1 2/3 innings and was handed the loss. Jaguars reliever Brandon Hallford (2-0) would get the win after tossing 2 1/3 innings in relief.
Â
The teams are scheduled to play the second game of a doubleheader, which is currently in a rain delay, around 4:00 p.m. Follow @TROY_Baseball1 on Twitter for updates.
