Troy Cruises Past Alcorn State, 72-51
12/2/2014 9:53:00 PM | Basketball (M)
TROY, Alabama – The Troy men's basketball team cruised to a 72-51 win over Alcorn State on Tuesday night at Trojan Arena. The trio of Wesley Person, Kevin Thomas and John Walton III led the Trojans in the win.
"The stats indicate, for the first time, that we had a positive assist to turnover ratio tonight, 18 assists to nine turnovers," said head coach Phil Cunningham.
"We have been needing that and we have been working on that. If you want to be a winning team, you have to take care of the ball and share the ball. We finally did that tonight. I thought it was a good effort, if you take out the first five minutes of the second half."
Person led all as he poured in 17 points, including all five of the Trojans' three-pointers. Thomas tallied the sixth double-double of his career with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Walton accounted for a season-high 15 points and tied a career-high reeling in seven rebounds.
To open the first half, the Trojans and Braves traded baskets. Troy had a hard time putting the ball away and tallied two turnovers in the first four minutes. The sloppy play allowed the Braves to tally five points off the turnovers, as they led the Trojans, 8-5, while shooting 50 percent from the field.
Troy continued to push the tempo as Thomas gave Troy a 9-8 lead that it held throughout the remainder of the contest. The Trojans carried out a 21-2 run over the next nine minutes to extend Troy's lead to 18 at 39-21 heading into the break.
The Trojans ended the half shooting 50 percent from the field. This marks the second-straight game the squad shot 50 percent or better from the floor. Troy tallied a 10 of it's season-high 18 assists in the first half alone.
Coming out of the half, Alcorn state was hot from the field as they went on a 6-0 run to cut Troy's lead to nine with 11:30 remaining in the contest. Despite their greatest effort, the Braves were unable to chip away at the Trojans lead after that, as the Trojans had an answer for each basket.
SWAC Preseason Player of the Year LeAntwan Luckett led Alcorn State with 14 points. Marquis Vance narrowly missed a double double as he tallied 10 points and a team-high nine rebounds.
On the game, Troy shot 47.4 percent from the floor. The Trojans had double the Braves' second chance points with 18. In the paint, Troy outscored Alcorn State 36-26.
Next up, Troy welcomes Central Arkansas to Trojan Arena on Saturday, Dec. 6. Tip off between the Trojans and the Bears is slated for noon.
