TROY, Alabama – Zack Lightsey (Sylacauga, Alabama) signed his National Letter of Intent on Monday to play baseball for Troy University, head coach Bobby Pierce announced. He will join the team in 2016.
Â
"We first saw Zack in the summer of 2013 in the American Legion state tournament and his overall athleticism impressed us immediately," assistant coach Mark Smartt said. "He is an outstanding quarterback at Childersburg, who's had a fine football career."
Â
Lightsey is a 6-2, 180-pound right-handed pitcher from Childersburg High School. He finished his junior season 11-2 with a 2.40 ERA. In both his sophomore and junior campaigns, he earned ASWA All-State Honorable Mention honors. He was named the Talladega County Player of the Year and Childersburg High School Player of the Year.
Â
On the gridiron, Lightsey was named 2013 Back of the Year and first-team All-County. He has served as team captain the last three seasons. Academically, Lightsey has been an 'A' student his entire high school career
Â
"He has had success as a hitter and middle infielder throughout his high school career," Smartt said. "He has won 17 games the last two year on the mound and we believe he's got a bright future as a pitcher because of his overall skill level as an athlete."
Â
"Zack has a great feel for all of his pitches and can really spin a breaking ball better than most his age. He will graduate in the top five of his class. There is no question in our minds that he fits our program as good as anyone can and he will continue to excel while at Troy."
