TROY, Alabama – Drew Frederic (Niceville, Florida) signed his National Letter of Intent on Monday to play baseball for Troy University, head coach Bobby Pierce announced. He will join the team in 2016.
Â
"Drew offers a high degree of athleticism and strength that bodes well for his future on the baseball field," assistant coach Mark Smartt said. "We are excited that he chose to play baseball at Troy since several FBS schools showed major interest in him as a defensive back."
Â
Frederic is a four-year letter winner as an infielder at Niceville High School in both baseball and football. He was a member of Niceville High School's 2014 District championship team and was named to the Northwest Florida Daily News Dandy Dozen. He batted .345 and led the team with 19 stolen bases and 32 runs scored. Frederic is also a three-time all-area selection by the NWF Daily News (2012, 2013, 2014).
Â
"He possesses a level of toughness that allows him to achieve at a high level in every athletic and academic challenge," Smartt said. "He impresses all of our coaches this summer with his skill level both offensively and defensively while continuing to play in several 7-on-7 football camps and competitions. As his focus shifts exclusively to baseball, we believe his overall game will flourish even more."
Â
On the gridiron, Frederic played quarterback and free safety and set the Niceville High School single-game passing record with 359 yards as a junior last season. As a sophomore, he helped lead Niceville to a district and regional championship and finished runner-up in FHSAA Class 7A with a 13-2 record.
