TROY, Alabama – Chase Smartt (Troy, Alabama) signed his National Letter of Intent on Wednesday to play baseball for Troy University, head coach Bobby Pierce announced. He will join the team in 2016.
Â
"Everyone associated with our program is excited that Chase chose to play in his hometown of Troy," assistant coach and Chase's father Mark Smartt said. "He has literally grown up on our field and to know he will wear the Troy uniform in 2016 is a special feeling for me."
Â
Smartt is the 31st rated catcher in the nation by Perfect Game and the 6th ranked player in the state of Alabama. As a member of the Charles Henderson High School squad, Smartt led the team to back-to-back state titles in 2013 and 2014. Last season, he batted .414 with 18 doubles, four home runs and 54 RBIs for the Trojans. Smartt was named ASWA Hitter of the Year, Super All-State and Perfect Game Underclassman Preseason All-American.
Â
For his career, Smartt holds a .417 average with 52 doubles, eight home runs and 139 RBIs. He earned MVP honors in the 2013 State Finals series finishing 5-for-7 at the plate with a double and a grand slam in the final game. He ended the series with seven RBIs.
Â
Smartt earned all-tournament honors at the World Wood Bat Association World Championship in Jupiter, Florida. He also played in the East Coast Professional Showcase in Syracuse, New York, as one of 25 players from five states selected by area professional scouts. Smartt was voted MVP of the prestigious East Cobb Baseball program in 2014 and also earned all-tournament honors at four Perfect Game national tournaments.
Â
"Chase has developed into a quality all-around player that can impact the game both offensively and defensively. His defensive ability and instincts as a catcher will transition well to the college game," Mark Smartt said.
Â
"He has continued to improve offensively each year and has been a run producer throughout his career. The accolades he has earned over the years speak to his success on the field, but his love and passion for the game of baseball are easily his best attribute."
