STARKVILLE, Miss. – Mississippi State scored 52 unanswered points en route to a 62-7 win over Troy at Davis Wade Stadium on Saturday.
The Trojans turned the ball over on their first two possessions and Mississippi State capitalized with 10 points. On 3rd-and-10, Corey Robinson was intercepted by Jamerson Love who returned it 70 yards for the Bulldogs first score.
After MSU recovered a fumble on the ensuing drive, the Bulldogs drove 56 yards before settling for a field goal to take a 10-0 lead.
"In SEC towns you find SEC team, coaches and players, that's what we found today. We've got to find out who we are. We knew it would be tough to match up against them and we certainly struggled with that today," Troy head coach Larry Blakeney said. "We've got to get back to work and fix the things that got us beat and hope they don't beat us again."
The Trojans responded with a 9-play, 65-yard drive capped by a 5-yard touchdown pass from Robinson to Eric Thomas. With his 23rd score, Thomas is one shy of tying the Sun Belt Conference record for career touchdown receptions held by Florida International's T.Y. Hilton (24).
The Bulldogs racked up 551 total yards of offense including 235 on the ground. Troy was held to just 186 of total offense. Robinson finished 15-for-25 passing for 105 yards. Brandon Burks led Troy in rushing with 43 yards on eight carries.
Troy's seven points were the fewest produced by the Trojans since scoring just six against Florida in 2009. Hampered by penalties throughout the contest, the Trojans were flagged seven times for 80 yards.
"We've got to put this one behind us and look ahead. We've certainly got a tough game coming up in Duke and we've got a lot of work to do before then," Blakeney said. "I think we can get to where we want to be but it's not going to be without hard work."
The Trojans will travel to Durham, N.C., to face Atlantic Coast Conference foe Duke on Saturday, September 28. The game is set to kickoff at 2p.m. (CDT) and will be televised on ESPN3 and can be heard on the Troy IMG Sports Network
