Trojans Compete at Georgia State Invitational

HAMPTON, Ga. – The Troy University cross country team competed at the Georgia State Invitational on Friday afternoon, facing off against some of the top competition in the region.

"It was about 88 degrees and dry today, but some people really had a breakout race," said cross country coach Jeff Jenkins. "There were some big statements made today by the women's squad and they're just getting started."

The women finished fourth overall with 98 points. Julia Ostendorf was once again the top finisher for the Trojans, completing the 4k race in 15:10.29 and finishing seventh. Mikayla Hodges came in 16th at 15:34.61, while Marsel Mosley took 22nd at 16:12.54.

Samantha Smith placed 24th overall at 16:19.04 and Sara Lane took 30th with a time of 16:35.46. Rae Leach placed 47th in 17:16.15.

"Julia put herself in front of Georgia State's number two girl and Mikayla was right there in the chase pack," Jenkins said. "I was most impressed with Rae Leach who had the biggest race of her life to date. As deep as our women's team is, she stepped up and took a spot on the bus to Louisville."

On the men's 8k, Tim Bulger took the top spot on the team, finishing 24th in 29:27.70. Sean Kent finished right behind him in 26th at 29:50.78.

Shakiel Parker took home 30th at 30:04.62, while Sam Ammons placed 31st in 30:15.82. Madison Estes was Troy's fifth scorer, placing 32nd at 30:22.49. Jake Bagwell narrowly missed scoring for the Trojans, placing 35th with a time of 30:43.77

"I wasn't too happy with the men's team, but there were a few positive moments," said Jenkins. "Tim Bulger stepped to the plate and overcame some tough conditions. Madison Estes showed that he is deserving of a varsity spot in his first ever race at that distance."

"Today produced some good and showed that some need to step up," said director of track and field and cross country Jill Lancaster. "The heat was tough but the women really challenged each other and worked well as a team. I feel confident that coach Jenkins will have the men doing the same thing in a few weeks."
