TROY, Ala. – The Troy softball team wrapped up its signing class with the addition of five more newcomers to the program for the 2014 season, head coach Melanie Davis announced on Thursday.
Erica Davis (Faulkner State Community College), Heather Johnston (Faulkner State Community College), Sara Mock (Enterprise State Community College), Allison Moore (Ashford High School) and Michelle Phelps (Northwest Florida State College) will join six signees to give the Trojans 11 newcomers next season.
Erica Davis, OF, (Grand Bay, Ala./Faulkner State CC)
Outfielder Erica Davis led Faulkner State with a .428 batting average and a .711 slugging percentage during her sophomore season. Davis hit 10 home runs, added 19 doubles and drove in 41 runs in 53 games. Her 19 doubles and 61 runs scored ranked 29th in the country, respectively, as Davis helped Faulkner State to a 39-14 record in 2013. The Grand Bay, Ala., native earned first team All- ACCC honors in 2013. While at Troy, Davis plans to major in exercise science.
Coach Davis on Davis:
"Erica is simply put, a very talented outfielder who plays it like a natural. She also has what I consider to be one of the most complete swings I have encountered in recent years. Her junior college numbers speak for themselves and as she works to transition to Division-I pitching, we feel she will provide excellent offensive production for us"
Heather Johnston, C, (Hueytown, Ala., Faulkner State CC)
Davis's junior college teammate Heather Johnston will also join the Trojans in 2014. In her only season at Faulkner State, Johnston earned first team All-ACCC honors and finished tied for third on the team with seven home run and 21 RBIs. Johnston hit .321 in 41 games as a catcher at Faulkner State; helping its pitching staff post a 2.42 ERA and record 205 strikeouts.
At Hueytown High School, Johnston was a four-year letterwinner and a member of the 2011 6A State Championships squad. During Hueytown's championship season, Johnston recorded a .349 batting average, eight home runs and 49 RBIs en route to all-state honors during her junior season. Johnston has three years of eligibility remaining and plans on majoring in nursing while at Troy.
Coach Davis on Johnston:
"I have watched Heather's development as a catcher for several years and I believe she will provide a strong arm and voice behind the plate. Heather also has a strong bat and I see her giving us some solid power offensively."
Sara Mock, P, (Kinston, Ala., Enterprise State CC)
A native of Kinston, Ala., Sarah Mock joins the Trojans after spending last season at nearby Enterprise State Community College. In her only year at Enterprise State, Mock was a second team Southern Region All-ACCC selection and first team Central League honoree.
Mock played Kinston High School from 2008-11 and earned all-state honors during each season. During her final two years at Kinston, she was selected Class 1A Pitcher of the Year by the ASWA and was also a two-time Super 12 selection. During her senior season, Mock climbed into the Alabama High School Athletic Association's record book for most wins (26), innings pitched (234.1), strikeouts (415 and shutouts (12) in a single season. With three years of eligibility remaining, Mock plans to study elementary education.
Coach Davis on Mock:
"Sara is an extremely talented athlete with exceptional spin and late movement on her pitches. Her variety of pitch will complement our entire pitching staff. Sara is a true competitor and her presence on the mound, along with further development from Coach (Sharon) O'Mara, I believe will elevate the program to the next level."
Allison Moore, OF, (Pansey, Ala./Ashford HS)
After leading Ashford High School to a Class 4A-Area 3 title in 2013, Allison Moore joins the Troy softball team in 2014. Moore, a speedy slapper, was named to honorable mention to the Alabama Sportswriters Association's All-State team last season. In her five seasons at Ashford, Moore was a five-time Wiregrass Athletic Conference All-Tournament selection. Moore also played travel ball for Spartans of Dothan, coached by Larry Delany. She plans on majoring in pre-physical therapy at Troy.
Coach Davis on Moore:
"We are delighted to have Allison join our program as we consider the Dothan area to be 'Trojan Country'. Â Allison has tremendous speed and is a natural in the outfield. As a pure lefty, she will also compete for time at first base."
Michelle Phelps, IF/Utility, (Pace, Fla., Northwest Florida State College)
As a two-way player at Northwest Florida State College, Michelle Phelps was a two-time all-conference selection posting a .311 batting average with 10 doubles, a triple and four home runs while picking up 34 RBIs. She also walked 25 times and finished with a .402 on-base percentage. In the circle, she finished 5-2 with a 2.09 ERA in 13 appearances during her sophomore campaign. Phelps was a part of a pitching staff that ranked in the top 50 in the country in ERA (2.34) and opponent batting average (.259).
As a freshman, Phelps led Northwest Florida State with 19 wins in the circle in 30 appearances. In 2012, Phelps posted a 3.54 ERA and was the team leader with 71 strikeouts, five complete games and 156 innings pitched. For her efforts, Phelps was named to the second team all-conference team. While at Troy, she plans on majoring in education.
Coach Davis says:
"Michelle is an extremely versatile athlete who will challenge for playing time at all four infield positions. She has one of the strongest arms and gloves on the team, plus a tremendous work ethic and drive to succeed. We are thrilled to have her join us."
