Collins’ Bat Leads Troy Past Alabama A&M 15-7

TROY, Ala. – Danny Collins homered and hit two doubles to lead Troy past Alabama A&M 15-7 Wednesday night at Riddle-Pace Field. The Trojans ran their home win streak to nine straight games as they scored in six different innings in front of a crowd of 1,942; the ninth largest in stadium history.
The Trojans (26-11) scored five runs in the first inning for the second straight night against the Bulldogs.
Collins and Trae Santos got the Trojans rolling with back-to-back two-out doubles. Josh McDorman followed with a single and Garrett Pitts drew a walk to load the bases. Justin Hancock then drove a single into left field to plate a pair.
Chase Mathis was then hit by a pitch and Clay Holcomb doubled to left-center field to score Pitts and Hancock.
Collins finished 3-for-5 with three runs scored and three RBIs, while Hancock was 2-for-3 with three RBIs. McDorman extended his hit streak to a career-best eight games with a 2-for-2 performance.
Logan Pierce extended his streak of reaching base safely to 42 games with a walk in the second and came around to score after back-to-back balks by the Bulldogs; Alabama A&M committed five balks in the game. McDorman and Hancock added RBI singles in the frame to extend the Troy lead to 8-0.
Collins stretched the Troy lead out to 10-0 in the third with a two-run double after a single by Tyler Vaughn and a walk by Pierce.
Jordan Friend put Alabama A&M on the board with a two-out home run in the fourth, but Collins answered with his ninth homer of the season in the bottom of the fifth. Cornelius Woods cut the Troy lead to 11-5 with a grand slam in the sixth following a Trojan error.
Pierce pushed the Troy lead back out to seven, 12-5, with an RBI single in the sixth. Ali Knowles hit a two-run double in the eighth and Pierce followed two batters later with a sac fly.
The Bulldogs (3-33) picked up a pair of runs in the eighth on an RBI single by Friend and a walk by Deon Hall with the bases loaded. Alabama A&M capped the scoring with two runs in the eighth.
Joe Hernandez (1-0) was credited with the win for the Trojans; he allowed a run on two hits in four innings of work. Dylan Johnson (0-1) took the loss for the Bulldogs after he allowed eight runs on five hits in an inning of work.
Troy returns to Sun Belt Conference action this weekend with a three-game Sun Belt Conference series against UALR. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. on Friday and 1 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
