MIAMI – With less than a month remaining in the regular season, the Troy softball team travels to Miami this weekend to face the FIU Panthers in a key Sun Belt Conference series.
The series begins Saturday afternoon with a doubleheader set to start at 3 p.m. CST. The series concludes Sunday morning at 11 a.m. CST. Live stats for the three-game series will be available at TroyTrojans.com.
Both teams enter the weekend in the middle of the pack in the conference standings. Troy (18-21, 6-5 Sun Belt) comes into the series after falling 6-1 on the road at Auburn on Wednesday night and the Trojans currently sit in the fourth in the league standings, behind conference-leader South Alabama, Western Kentucky and Louisiana-Lafayette.
In conference play, Troy ranks second in the league with a .329 batting average. Seniors Bailey Blake (.409) and Hannah Renn (.406) are both hitting above a .400 clip in league play. With 13 games remaining in the season, Caitlin Ortiz leads the club with a .376 batting average, 11 doubles and 12 hit-by-pitches. The senior's .520 on-base percentage is still on pace to break Troy's single-season record.
Michaela Hamilton has continued to string together a series of nice performances in the circle for the Trojans. In Troy's loss at Auburn on Wednesday night, Hamilton threw the final 2.1 innings allowing just an earned run and a pair of hits, while striking out four. In Sun Belt play, the senior southpaw leads the league with 0.58 ERA and has earned three of her victories against conference opponents.
After falling to UCF 2-0 during the midweek, FIU (24-20, 7-7) enters the weekend in fifth place in the Sun Belt, just one spot behind the Trojans. In the circle, FIU's Cor Jenkins has led the Panthers as the freshman has posted a 12-5 record with a 3.12 ERA in 20 starts. The 12 wins by Jenkins during the season are the most by a freshman pitcher in the Sun Belt.
