Trojans Begin Outdoor Season at Jaguar Open

MOBILE, Ala. – The Troy University track and field teams will travel to Mobile, Ala., to take part in the Jaguar Opener on the campus of South Alabama on Wednesday. It marks the beginning of the 2013 outdoor track season.
“We look forward to opening the season with an outdoor meet at South Alabama with a dual,” said head coach Jill Lancaster. “We will have some nontraditional events that will give some athletes an opportunity to prepare for what lies ahead.”
The Trojans will bring 53 student-athletes to the opening meet, as the outdoor season officially begins at in-state rival South Alabama. 17 athletes will be looking to make their outdoor track debut for the Trojans.
“This is a good rivalry for the team and the athletes look forward to making a statement in their first outdoor meet,” continued Lancaster. “For several, it will be their first meet in the Trojan uniform.”
On the women's side, Brynn Forsythe is expected to lead the way in the hammer throw and the shot put, while Shayla Smith should provide depth for the Trojans in the throwing events.
Alexus Cobbs will be in for a busy day, competing in five events on the day. Cobbs will compete in the long jump and triple jump on the field side, and will run in the 300-meter as well as the 4x100 meter relay and the 1600-meter relay.
On the men's side, Chaun Lynn will be competing in the long jump, 4x100 meter relay, 300-meter dash and the 1600-meter relay. Teammate Mack Howell will be looking to continue his ascent up the javelin record book, as he currently sits in second all-time.
“South Alabama has a good facility and our athletes enjoy competing there,” Lancaster said. “It will be a work meet and a test of our base training with such a short meet schedule.”
