TROY, Ala. – The Troy baseball team opens a five-game week with a trip to Alabama State on Tuesday night. First pitch between the Trojans and Hornets is scheduled for 6 p.m. from the Wheeler-Watkins Complex in Montgomery.
The Trojans will return home to host Jackson State on Wednesday at 5 p.m. before No. 24 Southern Miss comes to Riddle-Pace Field for a three-game series over the weekend.
All five games will be broadcast live on the Troy IMG Sports Network with local coverage on 94.7 FM in Troy and free worldwide coverage online at TroyTrojans.com. Troy's four home games will be broadcast with live audio and video via Trojans All-Access on TroyTrojans.com.
Fans will be able to keep up with the action with free live stats on TroyTrojans.com and via Twitter by following @TroyAthletics and @Troy_Baseball1.
The Troy (5-1) offense has found its stride during the early goings of the season as the Trojans enter the week ranked second in the NCAA averaging 11.8 runs per game. The Trojans have scored 10 or more runs in four of their six games and have plated at least eight runs in every contest.
Junior Danny Collins leads a trio of Troy hitters that have gotten off to torrid starts. Collins is batting at a .550 clip with three doubles, two triples, a home run and 12 RBIs. Logan Pierce hit .700 last week to raise hit average to .481 on the season to go along with four doubles and a homer, while Tyler Vaughn is batting .423 with four doubles and a pair of stolen bases.
The beneficiary of those three reaching base over 56 percent of the time has been Trae Santos as he leads the Trojans and the Sun Belt Conference with 14 RBIs and two triples.
The Trojans are batting at a .363 clip as a team and are tied for the lead in the Sun Belt with 32 extra-base hits despite playing the fewest games in the league.
Junior right-hander Tanner Hicks (1-0, 4.50) will get the start on the mound for the Trojans; Hicks was scheduled to start Troy's game against Central Florida on Sunday that was canceled.
Alabama State (7-1) is off to its best start in school history following a three-game sweep of SWAC foes Prairie View, Southern and Texas Southern at the Major League Baseball Urban Invitational.
The Hornets opened the season with a three-game sweep of Chicago State and a mid-week victory over Mercer before dropping their lone game of the season at South Alabama. Senior right-hander Anthony Ricciardi (1-0, 0.00) is scheduled to start on the bump for the Hornets; he struck out seven, walked two and scattered three hits in 4.1 scoreless innings last week against Mercer.
