TROY, Ala. – Twenty-two Troy seniors will say goodbye to Veterans Memorial Stadium when the Trojans host Texas State on Friday at 1 p.m. The goal for those seniors, and the rest of the Trojans, is to make sure that is not the final game they play in a Troy uniform.
Troy (5-6, 3-3 Sun Belt) enters the Black Friday contest against the Sun Belt newcomers one win shy of becoming bowl eligible for the sixth time in the past eight seasons. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN3.
Fans who bring a new and unwrapped toy to Gate 1 will receive a free general admission ticket as Troy has teamed up with the US Marine Corps in support of Toys for Tots. Additionally, Santa Claus will be in Tailgate Terrace from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. to take pictures. All kids 12 and under who visit Santa will receive a free general admission ticket.
Among those who will be playing for the final time in Veterans Memorial Stadium are the top quarterback and wide receiver in Sun Belt Conference history.
Corey Robinson holds all of the Sun Belt's passing records and the league's top mark in total offense, while Eric Thomas is the league's all-time leader in touchdown receptions.
Robinson, who has 19 touchdown passes and has thrown for 3,086 yards, is one of just five players in NCAA history to throw for over 3,000 yards in four seasons and can become just the fifth player in NCAA history with 3,000 yards of total offense in four seasons with just 19 yards against Texas State.
A Troy victory over Texas State (6-5, 2-4) would assure that the Trojans finish no worse than a tie for third place in the Sun Belt standings. Western Kentucky hosts Arkansas State on Saturday and the Hilltoppers have an identical league record as the Trojans; however, Troy beat Western Kentucky on the road back in October.
It will be strength vs. strength when the Trojans and Bobcats meet, as Troy's high-powered offense will square off against Texas State's shutdown defense. Troy leads the Sun Belt with 463.5 yards of offense per game and ranks second averaging 33.4 points per contest, while Texas State is second in the league allowing just 26.0 points and 390.8 yards defensively.
The Bobcats come to Troy with some uncertainty at the quarterback position. Freshman Tyler Jones suffered a broken bone in his throwing hand before the Bobcats game against Western Kentucky, however his replacement Tyler Arndt was 1-for-5 with three interceptions against the Hilltoppers. Despite the broke bone, Jones finished the game for the Bobcats, but his status for Friday is uncertain.
