TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Julia Ostendorf and Mikayla Hodges competed at the 2013 NCAA South Region Championships on Friday morning at the Harry Pritchett Running Park, with both posting impressive results.
"Julia ran a 6k season-best despite being on a much tougher course today than the one we ran on at South Alabama," cross country coach Jeff Jenkins said. "She was only a few seconds off setting a new personal best."
Ostendorf finished in 101st overall with a time of 21:59.64, beating her previous season-best 6k time of 22:05.
"Mikayla got out well, but struggled at the 2-mile point on the biggest hill of the course," Jenkins said. "She still ran close to her personal best from earlier this season."
Hodges had an impressive race as well, finishing in 143rd with a time of 22:54.52.
"As we go back through and look at who the girls beat, there are a lot of positive," said Jenkins. "The difficult course and the wet conditions provided somewhat of an equalizer for everyone, so we saw some real racing today. It's good to see people step up and beat people who are faster on paper than them. At this point, these ladies will take a little time off then start prep for inter-squad."
"We are proud of the way these ladies competed today and finished their season," director of track and field and cross country Jill Lancaster said. "This is very promising as we look ahead to the indoor and outdoor track season."
