Fantastic Finish - Troy Edges South Alabama in Final Seconds | Column: Thomas' Historic Day

TROY, Ala. – Troy University wide receiver Eric Thomas has been named the Sun Belt Conference Offensive Player of the Week, as announced by the league office on Monday morning.

Thomas played a crucial role in Troy's 34-33 win over South Alabama at Homecoming on Saturday. He finished the day with five catches for 129 yards and two scores, including the game-winning touchdown while being draped by a South Alabama defender with seven seconds remaining.

His first touchdown of the game was just as dramatic, as the 6-1 senior hauled in the longest play of the season for the Trojans, a 62-yard TD from Deon Anthony in the second quarter. With that catch, Thomas took over sole possession of the SBC record for most career receiving touchdowns with 25, a record that he had shared with FIU's T.Y. Hilton heading into the day.

On the national level, Thomas ranks among the best. His nine touchdowns this season are tied for the most in the country, while his streak of seven consecutive games with a score is the longest in the nation.

Thomas has now gone over 100 yards receiving five times in his career and has caught multiple touchdowns eight times.

Troy needed a come-from-behind effort to take down its in-state rival on Saturday at Veterans Memorial Stadium. The Trojans trailed 33-27 with 48 seconds to play, but put together a quality final drive, culminating in the Thomas touchdown, to take the win.

Troy returns to action on Saturday with a visit to the Georgia Dome to take on new Sun Belt opponent Georgia State at 2:30 p.m. The game can be seen live on the Sun Belt Network.
