TROY, Ala. – After an emotional, last-second victory over South Alabama, Troy must regroup quickly and turn its attention to a hungry Georgia State team as Sun Belt Conference play continues on Saturday.
Troy coaches aren't overlooking a winless Panther squad and see the game as an opportunity to improve the team's positioning in the conference standings.
"We have a shot to move up in the standings but we can't take anything for granted," head coach Larry Blakeney said. "Just like [South Alabama], neither team could breathe easy until the clock ran out. We can't sit back and let things come to us, we have to go out there and take it."
"They're going to bring pressure defensively then they're going to drop eight, they mix it up on you. On top of that, they tackle well in the secondary, they get people on the ground," Troy offensive coordinator Kenny Edenfield said. "That's going to be our main challenge, catching the ball and moving it for a first down."
The Trojans (3-3, 1-1 Sun Belt) racked up over 400 yards against South Alabama and showed on several drives that the offense could maintain drives and chew up the clock. Eating time, however, isn't exactly Edenfield's plan.
"We want to score on every play," he said with a laugh. "14-play scoring drives are good, but four or five-play drives aren't bad either."
Georgia State's defense has surrendered 469.8 yards per game and has allowed 38.2 points per contest.
On the opposite side, defensive coordinator Wayne Bolt must find a way to slow down Albert Wilson, the Panther leading receiver. Wilson has four touchdown catches on the year with 517 receiving yards, an average of 19.9 yards per catch. The senior also serves as the team's kick and punt returner.
As a team, the Panthers (0-5, 0-0) have scored just 71 points this season or 14.2 per game.
"This is a big game for us. Every conference game is important but this is the next one so it's most important," Blakeney said.
Troy and Georgia State are set for a 2:30 p.m. (CT) kickoff. The game will be televised on the Sun Belt Network.
