Trojans Compete at Crimson Classic

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Troy University cross country competed at the Crimson Classic on Friday evening, taking on its final test before the championship season begins. The Trojans will return to this course for the NCAA South Region Championships.
"I felt like we put in a good top-5 this evening," said cross country coach Jeff Jenkins. "It was nice to preview the regional course and race well one more time before the Sun Belt Championships."
The women's team placed 21st, with all eight athletes running season-best 5k times.
Julia Ostendorf led the way at 18:47.39, placing 74th overall. Mikayla Hodges was Troy's next finisher at 111th with a time of 19:20.55.
Marsel Mosley placed third on the squad at 19:56.83 and Haley Davies took fourth for the Trojans at 20:06.57. Samantha Smith was Troy's final scorer at 20:12.16.
Keaton Wallace finished in 20:30.80, while Kat Bokenfohr came in at 20:47.15. Rae Leach rounded out the Trojan competitors at 21:12.67.
The men's squad took 17th overall, with several season-best performances.
Enock Kirui placed first on the team and 59th overall at 26:10.65. Travis Lucas completed his first 8k of the season in 131st with a time of 27:45.41, followed closely by Tim Bulger at 27:45.41.
Both Madison Estes and Shakiel Parker posted their fastest times of the season, finishing in 27:56.83 and 27:56.90, respectively. Sean Kent took sixth for the Trojans with a time of 28:18.08, while Jake Bagwell took seventh at 28:55.25. Sam Ammons completed the race in 29:13.33.
"I was really impressed with the team effort today," said head track and field coach Jill Lancaster. "They worked as a unit and ran with a lot of spirit, which gives us confidence heading into the conference meet. Coach Jenkins has really done a great job with these athletes, as you can see from their improvement and the way they've all seemed to grasp 'the Trojan way'."
The Trojans now look ahead to the 2013 Sun Belt Cross Country Championship, hosted by Troy on November 2.
