TROY, Ala. – After a successful opening weekend of Sun Belt play that included a straight-set win over Middle Tennessee, the Troy volleyball team will look to hold the momentum as they return to Sartain Hall for a pair of Sun Belt matches.
The Trojans (10-7, 1-1) play host to a pair of Sun Belt East Division rivals as they take on FIU on Friday at 7 p.m. before hosting Florida Atlantic on Saturday at 5 p.m. Admission to both matches is FREE. Live stats and live video for both will be available via TroyTrojans.com.
Troy comes in with nearly a week's worth of rest under its belt after last Saturday's historic win over Middle Tennessee. The win was the first ever in Murfreesboro, Tenn., for the Trojans and the first over the Blue Raiders in Sun Belt play.
Breanna Cullity led the Trojans in the match with 19 kills and just five errors for a .389 attack percentage. The 19 kills were the second most by a Sun Belt player in a three-set match all season.
Troy hit a season-high .356 in the match thanks to 45 kills and just 13 errors, but the story of the 2012 season has been the Trojans' defense.
Troy sits second in the Sun Belt with an opponent hitting percentage of just .151 and first in the league with a 15.92 digs/set average. Courtney Cohen leads the Trojans at 4.84 digs/set, the second best mark in the Sun Belt.
Offensively, on the season, Troy is led by true freshman Blair Winston who averages 2.75 kills/set. However, it is a balanced attack as three other Trojans average over 2.00 kills/set. Cullity (2.63), Kayla Pickart (2.25) and Devin Von Pingel (2.16) all average over 2.00 kills/set.
Troy is 1-1 at home thus far in 2012 as they fell to Auburn in their home opener before defeating Florida A&M in their most recent home contest nearly two weeks ago.
FIU (4-10, 1-1) also split a pair of matches on its opening Sun Belt weekend, falling to UALR in five sets before sweeping Arkansas State, both at home. The Panthers played a tough non-conference schedule, falling to three ranked opponents.
Troy is 0-13 all-time against FIU, including an 0-6 mark in Sartain Hall. FIU won both meetings a season ago, sweeping the Trojans in Troy and winning a four-set match in Miami.
Florida Atlantic (4-8, 0-2) comes into the weekend after sweeping a non-conference contest against Bethune-Cookman on Tuesday. That win came on heels of two home losses, to Arkansas State and UALR, to open Sun Belt play last weekend.
Troy is 9-13 all-time against the Owls, including a 4-5 mark at home. Troy won both meetings a season ago, winning in five sets in Boca Raton, Fla., before winning in four sets in Troy.
