Troy Opens SBC Championships with FIU

NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Sun Belt Conference released the seedings for this week's Sun Belt Softball Championships, with the Trojans earning the sixth seed in the double elimination tournament. The tournament will begin on Wednesday at the FAU Softball Stadium in Boca Raton, Fla., and conclude on Saturday when an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament is awarded.
The Trojans (31-22, 10-14) enter the tournament on a six-game losing skid and will meet FIU (27-25, 15-9), the third seed, in the first game of the tournament at 10:00 a.m. CST on Wednesday morning.
FIU won its last two games of the season, defeating Florida Atlantic twice, but lost six of its previous seven, including two and three at South Alabama that cost the Panthers a shot at the tournament's second seed.
Troy is coming off of a doubleheader sweep at South Alabama a three-game sweep at the hands of North Texas at home last weekend.
Troy took two of three from FIU back on March 31 and April 1 in Troy. The Panthers took game one of the series, but Troy took games two and three. Sarah Thomas got the loss in the circle in game one for the Trojans, in what was her last start of the season. Ashley Rainey won game two and Jaycee Affeldt picked up the victory in game three.
Mariah Dawson was the pitcher of record in all three games for FIU as Troy scored 12 runs off of the Panther's ace in 9.2 innings.
Troy and FIU met in the first round of last season's tournament with Troy winning that game 4-0. Troy has been the tournament's sixth seed one other time, in the 2010 tournament in Mobile, Ala. Troy went on to advance to the title game in that tournament.
Troy will take on either No.2 South Alabama or No.7 ULM on Thursday. If Troy defeats FIU, they will play at 3:00 p.m. CST on Thursday. A loss to FIU puts Troy in an elimination game at 10:00 a.m. CST on Thursday.
