BOX SCORE
TROY, Ala. – Boone Shear belted a three-run home run and a trio of Troy pitchers combined for a six-hitter as Troy defeated ULM 5-1 in game one of a Sun Belt Conference doubleheader Saturday at Riddle-Pace Field. The win clinches the series for the Trojans following a 9-4 victory in the opener Friday; Troy has now won 10 of its past 11 Sun Belt series at home.
Jakob Nixon broke a 1-all tie with single through the right-side of the infield in the seventh inning and Shear salted the game away with his ninth homer of the season in the eighth.
Jake Harrell lined a ball off ULM starting pitcher Randy Zeigler with one out in the seventh for an infield single. Harrell took second as Zeigler's throw on the play sailed into right field. Brandon Brown came in to run for Harrell and scored on Nixon's 21st RBI of the season.
A pair of walks to Tyler Hannah and Logan Pierce set up Shear's no doubter over the wall in left-center field. Shear has now reached base safely in 36 of the past 37 games and has hit safely 18 of the past 19 games (at least two at-bats).
Joe Hernandez, the reigning Sun Belt Pitcher of the Week, took a no-decision for the Trojans (24-26, 12-14), but was solid once again on the mound. He held the Warhawks (24-26, 11-15) to just one run on four hits over 5.1 innings of work.
Nate Hill and Thomas Austin made their second appearances of the weekend and were masterful once again. Hill (5-2) picked up the win with 1.2 scoreless innings and Austin earned the save for the second straight game with two innings of shutout baseball; both allowed just one hit.
The Trojans struck first in the fourth inning with a two-out single by Harrell to score Shear, who reached on a fielder's choice and stole second base.
Judd Edwards tied the game in the sixth inning with a two-out double down the line in left field that was fair by about two inches. Jeremy Sy scored after he led off the inning with a single and moved to second on a wild pitch.
Zeigler (4-6) went the distance for ULM in the losing effort. He allowed five runs – four earned – on seven hits; he walked five and struck out eight.
The teams will play game two of the doubleheader beginning at 6 p.m. Saturday.
